Nurse Interview: Leader, Executive, or Manager

Nursing leaders work in a variety of positions: managers in hospitals, directors at various levels within clinical and non-clinical settings, executives within healthcare organizations, etc. For this assignment, students will conduct an interview to explore the characteristics and functions of nursing leaders. Students will then present their findings.

Part I: The Interview

The interview should be conducted formally using professional dress, tone, and manners. Interview questions should focus on leadership style, development of the nursing leader, and current issues and trends facing nursing and healthcare at local, national, and global levels. Students will learn from the interview experience, so  take the time to complete this portion of the assignment with enthusiasm.

Ensure the individual being interviewed has enough responsibility to be able to respond to the following questions. You will use these headings to organize and present your findings.

Introduction

Describe your education, nursing background, and current and previous positions.

Leadership Style

Describe the leadership style you identify with and most commonly use in your practice.

How did you develop your leadership style?

How has your leadership style evolved with experience?

Future Planning

How are you working towards sustainability for your practice setting in developing new nursing leaders?

To what professional organizations do you belong?

How are professional organizations impactful in developing nursing leaders?

Current Issues and Trends:

Describe current challenges you are facing in nursing and healthcare (today and in the past 2-5 years.)

How do these challenges impact your practice setting?

Describe the impact of these challenges at the local, national, and global level.

(For example, if staffing is a concern for the practice setting is it because of a local trend? Is this a tourist community in which the population fluctuates making finding and keeping qualified, dedicated staff a difficulty? Is this a challenge because this type of facility is impacted by local, national, or even global politics and economic circumstances?)

Part II: Presentation of Findings

You may present your findings as a paper, a PowerPoint presentation, or a video. Be creative! Be sure to include all of the content you covered during the interview in detail, as well as a conclusion. Resources for creating an effective presentation or video are available in the Resources area for this week.

Use these headings to organize and present your submission.

Introduction: Provide enough information for the audience to get a sense of the leader you interviewed. 

Leadership Style: Discuss the interviewee's leadership style.

Future Planning: Describe and explain the interviewee's future planning and professional development.

Current Issues and Trends: Describe the challenges discussed during the interview. Explain how they impact practice and the local, national, and global community.

Conclusion: Reflect upon what you discovered or learned during the interview. How does this experience impact you as a future BSN prepared nursing leader? Describe related changes to your practice you have implemented or plan to implement as you move forward with your practice and career.

Patient Safety Culture Pamphlet

Create a pamphlet using any type of publisher software you choose to educate clients on a current patient safety issue; for example, a currently aging adult and how to care for his/herself at home, medication-polypharmacy and how a patient can not make a self medication error, or other appropriate safety issues. If you have a question about a specific topic, check with your instructor.

Your pamphlet must include the following items:

Include at least 5 tips for preventive care for the patient.

Include information that should be shared with family or caregivers.

Include local resources in the community that might be available for this type of safety concern.

Include at least 3 current (published less than 5 years ago) references, in APA format.

In December 2019, discussion of a novel Coronavirus began making headlines. By the spring of 2020, the virus had become a global pandemic. The ever-changing climate facing the nation and world continues to evolve with new guidelines and recommendations being offered by reputable and non-reputable sources.

Discuss the following impacts of the novel Coronavirus using available data and scholarly sources to support your stance. Keep in mind, the information is updating and fluctuating making this a difficult subject to discuss. For the individual, the emotional impact should not be discussed until the reflection portion of the assignment. Remain as objective as possible throughout the assignment.

Political Climate: Discuss the political climate surrounding the novel Coronavirus on a local, national, and global perspective. Provide specific examples but remain objective. Do not share opinion; instead, remain objective and review specific points to indicate how the political climate either shapes or is shaped by external forces.

Legal Implications: Review legal implications as impacted by the novel Coronavirus. Identify and discuss a legal case directly linked to the virus. Remain objective and discuss associated facts of the case.

Policy: Identify one local, national, or global policy impacted by the novel Coronavirus. Provide a review of the policy before and after changes as impacted by the virus. Analyze the impact of the policy change and discuss how the policy impacts individuals and populations?

Interprofessional Healthcare: Review how the interprofessional healthcare team has been impacted by the novel coronavirus. Identify specific roles and review changes to daily responsibilities. Include a review of at least three disciplines in addition to nursing.

Nursing Implications: Discuss nursing implications impacted by the novel Coronavirus. Identify and review at least three nursing duties, responsibilities, or role changes due to the virus. Analyze the impact of these implications for the nurse, the patient, and populations.

Reflection: Reflect on how the novel Coronavirus has changed your life. Include personal and professional impact using the above categories as an outline. Share in a professional manner and do not over-politicize. This is not meant to be a social media posting opportunity.

Scholarly Writing: Paper is to be at least three pages in length (not including title and reference pages). Paper is to be formatted using APA style with correctly formatted in-text citations and references. Use of first-person (or “I”) is acceptable in the reflection section only as per APA guidelines. Use at least three scholarly sources. Refer to the WCU Library for writing assistance.
