Each student will perform a self-assessment of the NI competencies.

DIRECTIONS

Understanding one's own competencies in nursing informatics enables planning of strategies to enhance knowledge and skills. A graded, online self- evaluation of your informatics competencies is required. The grade, however, is only for completing the assignment. No grade is assessed for any individual responses or any summation regarding your level of competence in any area of the tool.

The self- evaluation is based on Level 3 and Level 4 Nursing Informatics (NI) Competencies and addresses the following areas:

Week 2 Assignment

Interview with NI Practitioner

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment ­­­­­­is for the learner to:

Evaluate the extent to which the INS functions as member, leader, and/or decision-maker of an Interdisciplinary and/or interprofessional team;

Compare interviewee functional roles against NI functional roles Identified within the current scope and standards of informatics practice statement for the INS;

Examine three nursing-informatics (NI) functional roles that the INS demonstrates in clinical practice;

Summarize the link between nursing theory and nursing informatics roles; and

Summarize insights gained from the interview in relationship to the INS role and practice

Directions

Interview (by telephone in person or by pre-scheduled webex meeting) a master or doctorally prepared informatics nurse specialist. Summarize the interview in a three to four-page report, including:

Method of the Interview.

Identify the degree of interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaboration the INS has.

Identify the INS’ predominant functional areas of practice and how these compare with NI functional areas defined in the American Nurses Association’s 2015 Nursing Informatics: Scope and Standards of Practice (2nd ed.).

Compare what you learned in the interview to what you have read.

Identify theory(ies) that support(s) the roles that the informatics nurse exhibits.

Criteria for Content

Introduction presents the topic of the scope and standards of informatics practice inclusive of functional areas, the key sections of the paper, and the interviewee without disclosing either their name or the name of their organization.

Key elements of the interview are summarized with an emphasis on describing the NI functional roles in which the interviewee practices, their practice within the scope and standards of nursing informatics practice, and degree to which the interviewee functions as a member of an interdisciplinary/interprofessional team as an MSN level leader and decision-maker.

Identifies underlying theory(ies) that support the practice of the interviewee.

Uses scholarly, evidence-based resources to support content, opinions, and conclusions. Analyzes differences and similarities between the information collected from the interview and published descriptions using the student’s own words, Conclusion includes the student’s unique insights about what was learned from writing the assignment.

Criteria for Format and Special Instructions

Position Description Analysis

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to facilitate students' application of the NI scope of practice and standards of practice to real-world settings.

Directions

Analyze the provided three position descriptions for an informatics nurse that are provided at the end of the grading rubric.

Summarize each description including the title of the position, required education and/or certification(s), required skills or competencies, functional areas of practice, and required experience.

Analyze the extent to which and how (e.g., what language is used in the description) these descriptions incorporate elements from the NI scope of practice, functional areas, and standards of practice.

Choose one of the three summarized descriptions to make recommendations for improved incorporation of the elements of the NI scope and standards of practice to meet current employer recruitment strategies and ideally attract a better applicant pool.

Criteria for Content

1. Review the three provided job descriptions (students wishing to review alternative job descriptions should first obtain the approval of their faculty).

Provides an overview of the topic of the paper and how it is organized in the introduction.

Summarize each job description, including the title of the position, required                                                                 

       education, required skills or competencies, and required experience.

Analyze each job description on the extent to which it incorporates elements from the NI scope of practice, functional areas, and standards of practice. The analysis should provide a short narrative that includes a table or graph that compares the key elements of the positions. Citations and references are expected. Tables and graphs should be your original work with no copyright violations.

Recommend three ways one job description can be enhanced to meet current employer recruitment strategies. Recommendations should be substantive and evidence-based with discussion of all three areas: functional areas, NI scope of practice, and NI standards of practice.

Conclude with your insights about the relationship of position or job descriptions in nursing informatics with the three elements (functional areas, NI scope of practice, and NI standards of practice) gained from working on this assignment.

Individual Development Plan

Purpose

Each student will create an individual development plan to attain or strengthen professional nursing informatics competencies that is based upon initial self-assessment of NI competencies at the beginning of NR541 that was due Week 1. For this assignment you will add to the Self-Assessment Competency document that you used for Week 1 assignment and submit to the Individual Development Plan assignment for Week 4. While you are encouraged to develop a plan for ALL areas that are identified as in need of further development (a self-assessed 2 or 3) for the purpose of this assignment select 10 priority competencies for further development that ideally are based upon your career aspirations.

Directions

Understanding one's own competencies in nursing informatics enables the identification of goals related to each needed competency, planning of strategies to attain needed knowledge and skills, establishes accountability, and promotes self-evaluation of your progress to attain core informatics competencies. The grade is limited to the creation of measurable goals and strategies. No grade is assessed for attainment of competencies within this course.

Week 7 Assignment

Network Presentation

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to identify an information network in your work setting. This could be within an organizational unit, an entire physical building, or across facilities.

DESCRIPTION

Identify an electronic or computer-based information network in your work setting. This could be within an organizational unit, an entire physical building, or across facilities. Do NOT select EHRs which are software applications. In a 15-to-20 PowerPoint slide presentation, describe the network's purposes, architecture, shape (draw the network, showing how nodes are related), scope (e.g., how much of the unit, building, or organization is connected by the network), users, and any issues related to the network's design and use. Relate the extent to which the network's characteristics fit your findings in the scholarly literature (that is, compare your network to typical networks described in published articles). In the event that you are unable to obtain detailed information about your network provide your recommendations for the ideal network architecture for your setting based upon the literature. Explain two advantages and two disadvantages of the selected network type for communicating information. Speaker notes for each slide should explain, in-depth, the key points shown on the slide.
