Week 1 Discussion

Area of Interest in NP

Over the course of the next eight weeks, we will be examining concepts related to nursing research and the translation of evidence to practice. To help you better understand the process, you will be identifying a practice issue for nurse practitioners. You will develop a PICOT question associated with the issue, find evidence to support a change in practice, and present your recommendations for change to your peers. This week, we will work on helping you refine your area of interest so that you will be able to develop a concise question for next week’s assignment. You are encouraged to use the area of interest you chose for the project in NR500NP and/or NR501NP; however, you may choose a different area if you wish.

Select an issue in nurse practitioner (NP) practice that is of interest to you and in which you would like to see a practice change occur. Conduct a review of literature to see what is currently known about the topic. In 1-2 paragraphs, describe the scope and relevance of the issue and your recommended change. Provide reference support from at least two outside scholarly sources to support your ideas.

Using the area of interest identified in the Week 1 discussion, address the following:

Draft a PICOT question using the standard quantitative PICOT format.

Identify your practice question, being sure to include the following:

Population

Intervention

Comparison

Outcome

Time

In ________(Population) what is the effect of ___________(Intervention) in comparison to ___________ (Comparison) on _____________ (Outcome) to be completed over __________ (Time).

Review the PICOT questions of two of your peers. Provide substantive feedback and suggestions for improvement.

With new information continually emerging, professional nurses must be equipped to critique scholarly literature and discern its value for practice. Select one current, quantitative scholarly nursing article related to your PICOT question and determine its strengths, limitations, and potential application.

Complete the Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence Based Practice Appendix E Evidence Appraisal ToolPreview the document. Once you’ve completed the tool, use your own words to summarize your appraisal of the article. Include the following:

Description of the purpose

Explanation of research design

Discussion of sample

Description of data collection methods

Summary of findings

Strengths of the study (minimum of 1)

Limitations of the study (minimum of 1)

Recommendations regarding potential application for future practice that are insightful and appropriate.

Week 8 Discussion

Peer Review

Purpose

The purpose of the graded collaborative peer review is to provide students with the opportunity to engage in the critique of peers’ week 7 evidence-based presentation. Scholarly information obtained from credible sources as well as professional communication are required. Meaningful dialogue among students fosters the development of a learning community as ideas, perspectives, and knowledge are shared.

Activity Learning Outcomes

Through this peer review discussion, the student will demonstrate the ability to:

Upload the Kaltura presentation you created in week 7 to the week 8 discussion area. Please post the presentation to the discussion area by Sunday 11:59 p.m. MT at the end of Week 7.
