What policies, if any, exist in your healthcare organization/institution that helps cultivate the skills needed to advance the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion?

If your organization does not have a DEI policy analyze the DEI policy of another healthcare organization and discuss what policies exist in the healthcare organization/institution that helps cultivate the skills needed to advance the principles of DEI.

What steps would you take to develop policies you can recommend to your chief nursing officer or chief executive officer?

What role do you play in eliminating discrimination and horizontal and lateral violence in your workplace?

Like healthcare disparities, disability disparities refer to the differences in service delivery, disability experiences, or clinical outcomes based on one's membership in a particular group such as age, race, culture, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status (Kersey-Matusiak, 2019).

Conduct a literature search to locate a journal article related to disability disparities. What disability disparity is the author referencing. What can you do as a nurse to address the disparity and ensure a positive outcome for patients? Consider Lewis' model. What biases might act as barriers to access to care for members of culturally diverse groups?

Conduct a literature search to locate a journal article related to people's health or health care practices from the LGBTQIA population. You should consider only articles published within the last five (5) years. Refer to the Krehely (2009) article, How to Close the LGBT Health Disparities Gap summary.

Discuss any changes made since this article was published? In June 2009, President Obama issued a directive on same-sex domestic partner benefits. Discuss the significance of this directive to healthcare access for this population.

Analyze this encounter with a healthcare professional: Doctor, I'm gay." "Great. We'll test you for HIV today." "But I'm not having sex." "How much do you drink?" Is this appropriate? Why? Why not? How, with humility, would you have approached this assessment with the patient?

Choose two journal articles related to the healthcare of new immigrants or refugees and one related to people from marginalized populations who are indigent and uninsured. Conduct a review and summarize the articles. Present a summary of the journal article, and examine how the information presented may impact your nursing practice. Conduct a literature search to locate a journal article related to children living in poverty, maltreated children, LGBTQ children, or immigrant children. What are health risks disproportionately higher for the child population you selected? What supports could you offer the family through local or national organizations to address your selected population's health risks? What factors influence your motivation to provide culturally sensitive care to your chosen population?
