Nursing research doesn’t have to involve rigorous research methods that are expected when conducting discovery research.  There is a great deal of data available in the public domain that would be useful for identifying risk factors, determining baseline rates for cost comparisons, and analyzing the trends of diseases and conditions. Select one of the two databases listed below and review the information that is available. Report on what you learned and how this knowledge could be utilized by healthcare providers to improve health outcomes. The CDC website contains a database of the results of the National Hospital Discharge Survey which has been conducted every year since 1965. Provided is a description of the characteristics of patients discharged from acute care hospitals in the US. HCUPnet is a free, on-line query system based on data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP). The HCUP provides access to health statistics and information on hospital inpatient and emergency department utilization.

DQ1 Assessing the quality and safety of care has become increasingly important to providers; especially with the advent of evidence-based practice. To provide quality care and services, data must be collected to measure baseline, targets, and progress in meeting pre-defined outcomes. If the correct data are not collected, it is impossible to monitor quality performance and outcomes.  For your discussion this week, visit the AHRQ, QSEN, IHI and NDNQI sites listed in your Resources section and review these resources available to create a culture of safety and quality in healthcare organizations. Evaluate these resources and provide an example of how these resources are integrated into nursing practice at your organization. Discuss recommendations for integration of additional resources not being utilized.

DQ2 This week you will begin working on your Systems Development Life Cycle Gantt Chart that is due in Module 7.  The basic purpose of a Gantt Chart is to break down a large project into a series of smaller tasks in an organized and logical way. To help prepare you for developing your own SDLC Gantt chart, your discussion this week will center on the tasks that were needed for the Wellness Alliance SDLC project case study (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018).

This discussion should take the form of a brainstorming session to identify the tasks, milestones, and timelines that were, or will be needed, for the Wellness Alliance SDLC. You are not limited to the tasks in the case study - please feel free to be as creative as needed. This discussion should help you with ideas for your SDLC Gantt chart assignment.

DQ1 Administrative functions include nurse financial resources, payroll, patient acuity, risk management, coding and scheduling functions to name a few.  It is critical that nurse administrators become astute informaticists to ensure efficient and effective care for their staff and patients.  Imagine yourself in the role of a nurse manager who is responsible for 50 nursing staff.  What information management systems and tools would you need to be able to perform the duties of managing the administrative functions of your unit?

DQ2 The National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators is an example of a database that collects nurse-sensitive indicators and patient outcomes at the same point in time.  This allows analysts and decision-makers to place the results in context.  In other words, did that patient fall occur when the staffing levels were low?  Review the information on the NDNQI site and provide a specific example and discussion of how you can apply these data to make decisions regarding administration and patient care.
