Personal Communication

Go back and review the Communication Principles in the reading and in this module's lesson content. Familiarize yourself with the information and address the following in your post.

Choose two of the principles of communication.

Provide two examples for each of the principles (so you will have a total of 4 examples by the end of your post).

How could you apply your knowledge of these principles in a future interaction to prevent or reduce misunderstanding?

For your response post, make sure that you write at least 3-4 sentences. In the sentences you can either bring in more information from the content of the module, suggest a different point of view, or ask a question for further information.

After watching these videos, answer the following questions in your initial discussion post.

What was your perception of Mary Fisher before she started speaking?

How did that perception change after she talked about her condition?

What type of listening did you use while watching the video?

Was there anything within the video that was a barrier for you? What, if anything, did you do to combat that barrier?

For your response, write a 5-6 sentence reply to at least one classmate's post. Within your response, compare and contrast your own opinions with your classmate's on both the perception and listening styles.

Module 3 Discussion

Verbal and Nonverbal Messages

For this discussion, you are going to observe a conversation between two people and comment on both their verbal and nonverbal behaviors during the interaction.

First listen to either a conversation you observed outside of your home, such as at school, a grocery store, an elevator or on a bus. Do not make it obvious you are listening to their conversation, just casually observe. While you are observing, try to answer the following questions and report back about the conversation in your original post.

What do you think the relationship between the two people was?

What do you think they were discussing?

What nonverbal actions occurred in the interaction?

What paralanguage did you pick up on and how did it influence the conversation?

Keep in mind these responses will all be conjecture because you will not know what the true answers are. The point is to see what information you can obtain by simply watching people converse.

For your response post, write 3-5 sentences offering different perspectives and observations based on what your classmate wrote. We all read nonverbal behaviors differently!

Relational Dialectics in Action

In this discussion, you are going to use the Relational Dialectics Theory to see what types of relational tensions are present in some of your relationships.

Select a personal relationship, such as a romantic partner, a friend, or a family member to use for the discussion. For your initial post, state what type of relationship you are describing, and then respond to each of the following questions with a minimum 4-sentence answer. Be sure to include examples to describe each of the tensions in your relationship.

Describe the autonomy/connection tension within your relationship, which one is the norm?

Describe the closedness/openness tension within your relationship, which one is the norm?

Describe the novelty/predictability tension within your relationship, which one is the norm?

For your response to another student's post, compare and contrast their answers to your answers. Try to find similarities and differences to see how each relationship is unique.

Positive Responses to Relational Conflict

Think about a conflict you have experienced either in the workplace or in a significant personal relationship. In your initial post respond to the following questions with a minimum 3-4 sentence answer.

Describe the situation briefly and consider which response to conflict was demonstrated by either you OR the other person in the conflict. (Examples would be avoidance or collaboration.)

What communication strategies did you use to resolve the conflict?

For your response, compare and contrast the conflict you discussed in your original post with your classmate's conflict. Make sure your response is 4-6 sentences long.

How Far Have You Come?

For this discussion, you are going to take a look back at how far you have come as a communicator, what you still need to work on, and what strengths you possess. Please answer the following questions with a 3-5 sentence answer, utilizing personal examples, information from readings, or general observations.

Since the beginning of the course, what, if anything, have you learned about how you communicate? What has changed in your communication that has made you a better communicator?

What have you found as one of your weaknesses as a communicator? How are you going to try to make yourself more effective in this manner?

What skill is a strength of yours and how do you envision being able to apply it in your future career?

Review the posts made by your classmates and choose someone whom you can offer suggestions to for improving that weakness.
