Module 1 Discussion

Are we ready for neo-evolution?

Discussions are an opportunity for you to practice clearly and effectively communicating your ideas, interact with and respectfully challenge your peers, and support your writing with examples and scholarly resources as appropriate.

It's time to get introduced to the concepts of genetics, evolution, and the relationship to biopsychology.  Watch the TEDTalk to introduce yourself to important concepts within this module, and then answer the questions.  Remember this is due before your discussions, on Wednesday of each week.  The purpose of this is to help scaffold your learning so that you are introduced to module topics in the first assignment and then complete the learning quiz to help you become more familiar with the language and concepts.  You'll then be fully prepared to participate in a meaningful way within the discussion for the week, and be able to show off the things you've learned in your assignment due every Sunday.

Successfully completing this activity demonstrates achievement of Module Outcomes 4 and 5.

Now answer the following questions and respond in your reaction assignment (be sure to look at the grading rubric in order to earn as many points as you can):

- What did you think of the video and the things Harvey Fineburg talked about?  Explain your thoughts on how this video relates to the field of biopsychology, and include a description of evolution.

- Think of an example of a behavior or structure that is currently adaptive but that might become nonadaptive, or even maladaptive, if the environment were to change.  Describe your example and your reasoning.

- In your writing, be sure to identify ways in which modern advances have changed our understanding of genetic processes and identify the the ethical challenges and solutions associated with these advances.

Consult Discussion Criteria and the Discussion Posting Guide for information about writing your discussion posts. It is recommended that you write your post in a document first. Check your work and correct any spelling or grammatical errors. When you are ready to make your initial post, click on "Reply." Then copy/paste the text into the message field, and click “Post Reply.” This is a “post first” discussion forum. You must submit your initial post before you can view other students’ posts.

To respond to a peer, click “Reply” beneath her or his post and continue as with an initial post.

Remember to properly cite and reference your sources in APA format!

Evaluation

This discussion will be graded using the discussion board rubric. Please review this rubric, located on the Rubrics page within the Start Here module of the course, prior to beginning your work to ensure your participation meets the criteria in place for this discussion. All discussions combined are worth 35% of your final course grade.
