Part A: Answer the following questions about Antibiotic Resistance. 

1) Why do you think doctors and scientists are concerned about the recent outbreaks of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections?

3) What was the first antibiotic, who discovered it and how? Describe the history of this famous antibiotic.

4) Why are antibiotics used on farms? Why are some scientists concerned about this? 

5) Why should you take the full course of an antibiotic, exactly as the doctor recommends? How is this related to bacteria developing resistance to antibiotics?

Part B: Specific concerns about antibiotic resistance in bacteria

Use the CDC, American Lung Association, and World Health Organization to investigate current bacterial infections that are most concerning regarding antibiotic resistance. Pay particular attention to Extensively Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (XDR TB). 

Be sure to cite your sources.

1) What causes tuberculosis, how is it transmitted, and what are its symptoms?

2) Describe XDR TB and explain why health care professionals are so concerned about it. How does someone develop XDR TB and describe how it is treated.

3) What are some other bacterial infections that are becoming more difficult to treat because of antibiotic resistance? How are they treating these infections (be specific)?
