Week 1: Introduction to Course/Planning & Organizing Capstone Project/Developing Executive Summary

You can begin to think about your capstone project and visualize it utilizing the nursing process:assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate. Reflect about the who, what, when, where, how, and why as you unfold your project.  Touch base with your preceptor the first week of class to identify a project. Explore the clinical site website for information. Start thinking about your project. We realize you may not have details in the beginning but these questions assist you to focus on a project.Your first progress report with details is due week 3.

1.What unit/department/organization will you be completing your Capstone Project at and where is it located?

2.Talk to the site preceptor and think of a topic of interest to both you and your preceptor. What will your topic be?

3.How does preliminary research support my topic?

4.Is it feasible to do the project in a semester?

5.How will your project improve client outcomes?

6.What do you need to accomplish your project?

Week 3: Professional Management & Leadership This week is a two part DB on leadership. Please respond to both questions.

Part 1: Think of a time when you felt powerful and a time when you felt powerless as a result of what a leader said or did. Describe specifically what they said or did in each situation. What was the effect on your emotional state? Your morale? Your performance? Summarize the implications for leaders of making people feel powerful or powerless.

Part 2: How can leaders work to create a climate of trust and facilitate relationships among people in a work team? What can leaders do to show others that they are trustworthy? What can they do to demonstrate that they trust others?

Week 6: Human Resource Development/Communication/Conflict Management

The focus of this discussion is to understand the importance of identifying signs of conflict and how to manage them.  Unresolved conflict is a barrier to teamwork.  When you have an environment of team collegiality, there is less negative conflict, increased commitment to the organization, and greater satisfaction, autonomy, and control over practice. It is part of the nurse leader's role to create an environment that facilitates professional practice.

 Scenario:

You have been working with your assigned nurse leader for approximately one month and have had the opportunity to observe that person's ability to lead a team.  Nurse leaders are often faced with a difficult employee.  There is a difficult employee (a peer) on your team creating disharmony through lack of initiative, failure to complete tasks, and speaking disrespectfully to other staff members.  This difficult employee's negative behavior is affecting team performance and effectiveness, job satisfaction, and turnover rate on the unit.  

Discuss best practice conflict management skills that the nurse leader can use to create a safe space to diffuse the conflict and create a collegial environment where teamwork is valued and ideas can flourish. 

Consider your own conflict management style.  Would your conflict management style be effective in achieving resolution?  Explain why or why not.

2. How significantly did overall quality ratings differ from one hospital to the next?

3. What did you learn about the hospitals you reviewed? Did anything surprise you?

4. Based on the data, where would you focus an improvement effort? How did the data help you select this area of focus?

Week 9: Budgeting Process, Resource Allocation & Finances

This week you have explored the financial concepts of budgeting and planning for costs for implementing new programs or projects. It is now time for you to develop the section in your Capstone Project Proposal titled "Business Case".  Take time to review the Capstone Project Proposal Rubric and focus on this section.

For the DB this week-Define the types of budgets in healthcare organizations (Capital, operating, cash). Describe what costs are covered in each of these specific budget types related to the definition. Please identify which budget will apply for your project funding needs and provide a rationale.

Write your Business Case and include  the following  items:

•Projected costs estimates to implement your project,

•How these costs align with your project implementation activities, and

•Consider source of funding and describe.

Please note: Project costs must be realistic and align with organizational goals.

Make sure you use concepts from the literature and presentations that you read and viewed this week. Title your Discussion Board Thread with your last name, business case, and project topic.

This week you have explored Future Trends in Nursing Practice and some of the organizations and reports that are influencing how the nursing profession educates nurses so they have the knowledge to serve on teams that are transforming how we delivery patient care.  These trends, organizations, and reports also inform the nursing profession that nurses need to participate on a  local, state, and federal level in designing policies that impact the delivery of health care. 

Two DB activities are required this week:

1. Review the AONL website and discuss what you have identified as the best practices and competencies for nursing leadership. Include the outcomes you would  expect to see from using this (150-300 words).  Include in your posting comments why you  think  this leadership style is best practice and how it can impact leading health teams to transform health care delivery and improve patient outcomes.

Week 14: Capstone Presentations Feedback  

This week it is time to show case your projects and learn from each other's projects. On the discussion board post your PowerPoint presentation that includes information on your project.  When you post your PowerPoint presentation post an invitation inviting your classmates to view your presentation and ask comments.  Check the discussion board frequently to answer questions that your colleagues ask.

Post responses to at least 2 of your classmates presentations that interest you and comment on the following observations from viewing the project:

1) Comment on how you see the project contributing to improving patient safety or other outcomes.

2) Comment on if you think your colleagues project would benefit your organization.

You have now completed your Capstone Projects. You have explored several areas related to your professional practice and future career development. This week please review the work you have done on your Capstone Project and briefly discuss leadership lessons learned and the impact of your project on your clinical site. Also discuss ways that this course has influenced your thinking about your career path and reflect on what you have learned over the semester and how this will shape your professional career .
