Look through several major newspapers for articles that discuss care for the elderly in the community or care for those at the end stage of a life-threatening illness. Then answer the following questions:

A) What is the role of a community health nurse in assisting families in the care of the elderly in their homes?

B) What are some of the barriers related to the initiation of home care services in communities?

C) How does living in an urban area versus a rural area affect home care services?

Week 3 Discussion

Within your community, there has been a large increase in teenage smoking, and community leaders are developing a plan to decrease the incidence of smoking. To help them, you will:

A) Develop a research question to address the problem.

B) Determine what kind of study should be undertaken.

C) Design a study to decrease the incidence of smoking in teenagers.

Week 4 Discussion

Recently, immunizations have become a major topic in health care at the governmental level. Based on community-level data, you have identified the need to increase immunization rates in the refugee and immigrant population in your community. Whom might you enlist as partners in planning and implementing programs to achieve desired health outcomes at the community level? Why did you select these partners?

Week 5 Discussion

You are a school nurse. A student comes into your office and is hesitant to share his thoughts with you. What could you say or do to develop a therapeutic alliance?

Week 6 Discussion

An 86-year-old male parishioner is on hospice care at home, and his daughter, who is a nurse, has been trying to meet all his physical needs around the clock. The pastor, who made a home visit, calls the faith community nurse to express his concern that the daughter is becoming "burned out." How can the faith community nurse engage the faith community as a whole to provide volunteer support to this family?

After viewing your classmates’ presentations, describe some new things you learned about two different vulnerable populations other than the one you researched.

As you look back on Sessions A & B of Public Health Nursing, reflect on what you knew then and what you know now about the role of the public health nurse and her/his importance locally as well as globally to various communities.

Write a paper that addresses the following:

How does the community health nurse assist the families of patients in their home settings?

What are some of the barriers related to the initiation of home care services in communities?

How does living in an urban area versus a rural area affect home care services?

Your paper must be three to four pages in length, in APA format, typed in Times New Roman with 12-point font, and double-spaced with 1” margins. Include a minimum of three references.

Week 6 A Comprehensive Health Education Program Presentation on a Specific Vulnerable Population

Your specific vulnerable population topic should have been submitted for approval to your instructor by the end of week 2 and approved/finalized by week 3.

This week, submit your presentation on your approved topic using the Kaltura recording tool. It must be at least 15–20 slides, not including your cover slide or reference slides. Your reference slides should cite at least seven references. Your presentation should, at the minimum, include the following topics regarding your chosen vulnerable population and related health education program/plan:

Clearly states population chosen

Describes the vulnerable population

States the current population demographics

Discusses background of the problem, and its effect on public health

Discusses the cultural background of the selected population and any relevant history pertaining to the population

Discusses the psychosocial concerns and/or norms of the population

Discusses the economic concerns of the population including, but not limited to, income levels, educational levels and occupation

Discusses specific health concerns of the population

Information on specific risk factors for target population is presented concisely and accurately

Discusses prevention and control of health concerns and risk factors (primary, secondary and tertiary)

Discusses the role of the public health nurse in caring for vulnerable populations

States the core functions of public health and applies it to the care of the specific population

Three local agencies/facilities delivering services to the target population are identified and accessibility and service rendered are fully described

Additional resources needed in the community are identified.

Information discussed is current, within the last 5 years.

Remember that your presentation will be viewed/critiqued by your classmates and your instructor, and should be professional in format/appearance.
