Week 5: Data Collection Methodology and Analysis

This assignment provides the opportunity for the student to continue development of a MSN EBP scholarly project that started with the identification of a nursing issue, creation of the PICOT/PICo question, determining the research approach, literature review, and type of sampling. The focus of this assignment is to identify an appropriate data collection methodology and analysis.

This assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcome:

CO#4 Develop knowledge related to research and evidence-based practice as a basis for designing and critiquing research studies (PO 1, 2, 6, 9)

Description of the Assignment

This continues the development of a MSN scholarly research project by requiring the student to identify the data collection methodology and analysis.

Criteria for Content

1. Assignment Revision: In the Week Three’s assignment, four research-based articles were critiqued and the results were placed in a table (Research Critique Table). Faculty provided feedback concerning the information identified by the student. For the Week Four assignment, the information from the Research Critique Table was transformed into a narrative section called: Research Literature Support. Theoretical framework and change model sections are added.For this week (Week 5), use the faculty feedback from the Research Critique Table and revise the narrative Research Literature Support.

2. Data Collection Methodology:Select and respond to the criteria consistent with research approach selected for use in the project.

For quantitative data, the required content includes:

· Detailed explanation on how data collection will occur

· Data collection points

· Length of time for data collection

· Explanation regarding the source of data that will be used (i.e. self-report, questionnaires, structured observation, biophysiologic)

· Describe how data quality will be fostered

For qualitative data the required content includes, but not limited to:

· Describe the type of data (i.e. observation, interviews, artifacts, etc.)

· Provide a detailed explanation on how data collection will occur

· Explain data collection points

· Explain length of time for data collection

· Explain method to achieve data saturation

· Description of 2 methods that would be useful in enhancing data quality

3. Analysis: Select and respond to the criteria consistent with research approach selected for use in the project.

For quantitative data analysis:

· Explain the data analysis for the study:

o Descriptive analysis---what descriptive statistics do you expect to be used to describe the sample

§ Frequency distribution

§ Central tendency

§ Variability

o Bivariate Statistics—which of the following bivariate statistics would be used, if any:

§ Crosstabulation

§ Correlation

§ Describing risk

§ t-tests

§ ANOVA

For qualitative data analysis:

· Explain how content analysis will occur for the appropriate qualitative design tradition selected for the project:

o Participant observation

o In-depth interviews

o Focus groups

o Historical documents

· Explain the desired outcome of the data analysis based upon the qualitative research design(phenomenological, grounded theory, ethnographic, historical)

· Explain how the data analysis approach was appropriate for the qualitative design tradition (phenomenological, grounded theory, ethnographic, historical)

4. Conclusion: The conclusion includes:

· Provides a summary of key elements from paper

Criteria for Format and Special Instructions

1. The paper (excluding the title page and reference page) should not exceed 6 (six)pages. Points will be lost for not meeting these length requirements.

2. Title page, running head, body of paper, and reference page must follow APA guidelines as found in the 6^th edition of the manual. This includes the use of headings for each section of the paper except for the introduction where no heading is used.

3. A minimum of 2 (two)scholarly references must be used. Required textbook for this course, dictionary and Chamberlain College of Nursing lesson information may NOT be used as scholarly references for this assignment. For additional assistance regarding scholarly nursing references, please see “What is a scholarly source” located in the Course Resources tab. Be aware that information from .com websites may be incorrect and should be avoided. References are current - within a 5-year time frame unless a valid rationale is provided and the instructor has approved them.

4. Ideas and information from scholarly, peer reviewed, nursing sources must be cited and referenced correctly.

5. Rules of grammar, spelling, word usage, and punctuation are followed and consistent with formal, scientific writing.
