Reflective Essay

The purpose of this assignment is to promote introspective reflection related to leadership competencies that positively influence others and cultivate healthful working relationships. Students will reflect upon personal strengths and opportunities for enhancement with respect to leadership competencies and implications of leadership competency in the selected MSN specialty practice.

•             CO #3 - Integrate communication modalities which convey cultural humility, value the diverse nature of individuals, and cultivate healthful work environments.

•             CO #5 - Recognize individual strengths and opportunities for enhancement regarding leadership characteristics reflective of a MSN-prepared nurse.

REQUIREMENTS

Criteria for Content

Based upon readings and learning activities within the class lessons, reflect upon specific leadership-related competencies which you possess and leadership competencies where there is an opportunity for enhancement.  Identify two specific areas of strength, and two areas for improvement.  How will those competencies impact future practice as a MSN-prepared nurse in your specialty area? 

In a two- to three-page reflective essay, address the following elements.  Include a minimum of two peer-reviewed scholarly sources, current within five years, to support your work.  See rubric for specific, required content criteria within each section of the paper:

1.            Provide an introduction to the reflective essay.

2.            Consider your personal leadership competencies

3.            Explain two specific examples of how leadership competencies will impact your practice in the selected MSN track.

4.            Provide a conclusion to the reflective essay.

PREPARING THE ASSIGNMENT

Criteria for Format and Special Instructions

1.            Abide by the Chamberlain College of Nursing Academic Integrity Policy.

2.            Use Microsoft Word 2013 to create the reflective essay.

3.            The paper (excluding title and reference pages) should be at least two full pages in length and should not exceed three full pages in length.

4.            A minimum of two (2) peer-reviewed scholarly sources, current within five years, are required.

5.            Sources older than five years may not be used without the permission of the class professor.

6.            No direct quotes may be used in this assignment.

7.            Title page, running head, pagination, subheadings, body of paper, citation of sources, and reference page must follow APA guidelines as found in the 6th edition of the manual.

8.            Rules of grammar, spelling, word usage, punctuation, sentence and paragraph structure are followed and consistent with formal, scholarly writing as noted in the APA Manual (6th edition).

9.            First person may be used for this assignment.

Leading a Culture of Excellence Paper Part I

PURPOSE

The purpose of this assignment is to consider the value of a culture of excellence and leadership strategies which support a culture of excellence within the student’s selected MSN track.  Students will identify organizational characteristics which support a culture of excellence.  In addition, students will identify an existing organizational mission, vision, and values and create an original concept map to portray the interrelationships between each element.  The extent to which the organizational mission, vision, and values reflect a culture of excellence will be examined.  Leadership strategies which promote a culture of excellence and support the Chamberlain Care Model® will be applied.

COURSE OUTCOMES

Through this assignment, the student will address the following Course Outcomes:

•             CO #1 - Discern leadership approaches that facilitate achievement of health outcomes through interprofessional collaborative practice within micro-, meso-, and macro-level systems.

•             CO #2 - Appraise the role of the MSN-prepared nurse to lead safe, efficient, ethical, high-quality, person-centered health care across complex systems.

•             CO #3 - Integrate communication modalities which convey cultural humility, value the diverse nature of individuals, and cultivate healthful work environments.

Part I: Concept Map

1.            Identify the mission, vision, and values of a selected organization.

2.            Create a concept map which portrays the relationships between the organizational mission, vision and core values, depicting how they do or do not support a culture of excellence.  The concept map must be your own, original work.

Part II: Written Paper

1.            In a three- to four- page paper, address the elements below.  Use a minimum of four peer-reviewed scholarly sources, current within five years, to support your work. See rubric for specific, required content criteria within each section of the paper:

a.            Provide an introduction to the paper.

b.            Discuss the characteristics of a culture of excellence.

c.            Present the mission, vision, and values of a selected organization, and explain the interrelationships between each element in the concept map.  Describe how the mission, vision, and values do or do not support a culture of excellence.

d.            Discuss application of three specific leadership strategies which promote a culture of excellence, and how they support the Chamberlain Care Model®.

Criteria for Format and Special Instructions

1.            Abide by the Chamberlain College of Nursing Academic Integrity Policy.

2.            Part I:  Create and submit a concept map as a pdf or word document. 

a.            Concept map may be neatly drawn by hand or created using software.

b.            Concept map must be clear and legible.

c.            Concept map must be the student’s original work. 

3.            Part II: Using Microsoft Word 2013, create the written paper for this assignment.  Include a title page with your name, date, and course information, as well as a reference page.

a.            The paper (excluding title and reference pages) should be three to four pages in length.

b.            A minimum of four (4) peer-reviewed scholarly sources, current within five years, are required.

c.            Sources older than five years may not be used without the permission of the class professor.

d.            Only one short quote (15 words or less) may be used within the body of your writing.

e.            Title page, running head, pagination, subheadings, body of paper, citation of sources, and reference page must follow APA guidelines as found in the 6th edition of the manual.

f.            Rules of grammar, spelling, word usage, punctuation, sentence and paragraph structure are followed and consistent with formal, scholarly writing as noted in the APA Manual (6th edition).

g.            First person may only be used in the self-reflection portion of the assignment (see conclusion section for criteria).

Leadership Style and Change Advocacy Statement

PURPOSE

The purpose of this assignment is to synthesize insights gained through learning activities and personal reflection in order to create a personal leadership style and change advocacy statement.  Students will record a video of themselves presenting their individual leadership style and change advocacy statement.  Students will conclude by noting how the selected leadership style can facilitate the change process.  A concise summary paper is included.

COURSE OUTCOMES

Through this assignment, the student will address the following Course Outcomes:

•             CO #1 - Discern leadership approaches that facilitate achievement of health outcomes through interprofessional collaborative practice within micro-, meso-, and macro-level systems.

•             CO #3 - Integrate communication modalities which convey cultural humility, value the diverse nature of individuals, and cultivate healthful work environments.

•             CO #4 -Apply change and leadership theories to plan sustainable, evidence-based quality improvement within an atmosphere which supports care for self and others.

REQUIREMENTS

Criteria for Content

Consider the insights gained through class readings, self-assessment of leadership capacity, reflections on individual competencies, and the issue related to your specialty track for which you will advocate for change.  Complete parts I and II of the assignment using the guidelines and rubric below.

Part I: Video Recording

1.            Create a one- to three- minute video recording of yourself presenting the following (refer to the rubric for specific requirements):

a.            Introduction

b.            Your personal leadership style

c.            Your change advocacy statement and rationale

d.            Conclusion

IMPORTANT – the intent of the video portion of the assignment is to videotape yourself presenting the information.  No PowerPoint or other media should be used to deliver the information in the video.  The recording must include you presenting information face to face with the camera.

Part II: Written Summary

1.            Create a concise, summary, no more than two pages in length, explaining the following elements.  Include a minimum of two peer-reviewed scholarly sources (current within five years) to support your work.  Refer to the rubric for specific requirements:

a.            Introduction

b.            Statement of personal leadership style

c.            Change advocacy statement and rationale

d.            Conclusion

Criteria for Format and Special Instructions

1.            Abide by the Chamberlain College of Nursing Academic Integrity Policy.

a.            Follow the instructions to create and upload a video recording using Kaltura, which is located in the Canvas course.

b.            Please refer to the Kaltura tutorial for specific instructions; the tutorial is located in your weekly module.

c.            The video recording must be a minimum of one minute and no more than three minutes in length.

3.            Part II: Using Microsoft Word 2013, create the summary paper for the assignment.  Include a title page with your name, date, and course information, as well as a reference page.

a.            The summary paper must be concisely written and no more than two pages in length, excluding the title and reference pages
