Purpose:
The purpose of this course project is for learners to explore how living nurses are making nursing history, apply lessons from nursing history, and analyze the impact of this project on nursing history today.

Overview of NR393 Course Project:
There are three parts to the NR393 Course Project
Phase 1: Selected Nurse Information due end of Week 1
Phase 2: Conversation with the Selected Nurse due end of Week 3
Phase 3: Reflection Paper due end of Week 6

Points Possible:
The entire project is worth 600 points. Course Project Phase 1: Selected Nurse Information is worth 150 points.
Directions for Phase 1:
Select one registered nurse that you know who is creating nursing history today to be the subject of this course project.
This RN must have at least 10 years of RN licensure.
The nurse could be a family member, friend, colleague, acquaintance, manager, former instructor, or other nurse who is creating, delivering, or influencing the practice of nursing in your area. Do not select a former or current patient.
Remember that all nurses are making nursing history today in their own ways, not just the nurses writing books or leading large health systems in innovative change.
Clearly explain to the selected nurse that statements made in the Phase 2 Conversation for this project will be recorded (audio, video, and/or written) and submitted to the instructor for scoring purposes. The interview is not intended for public access. The conversation will be about the Selected Nurse's:
memories of nursing and nursing education;
contributions to nursing related to leadership, provision of care, and/or evidence-based practice; and
persons or events that have influenced the nurse's professional practice.
Select a date, time, and location to conduct the Conversation with the selected nurse to be scheduled between Saturday of Week 2 or during Week 3.
NOTE: Do NOT conduct Phase 2: Conversation with the Selected Nurse until you receive feedback (in course Grades area for Phase 1 Selected Nurse Information) from your instructor about approval of the nurse you have selected.

Directions:
Download the NR393 Course Project Phase 2: Conversation with the Selected Nurse Template (under Template below). This contains all areas to be addressed and the required questions you are to ask your Selected Nurse.

Conduct the Phase 2: Conversation with the Selected Nurse after receiving approval from your instructor in the Gradebook for your Phase 1: Selected Nurse Information. The conversation will occur between Saturday of Week 2 or during Week 3 after instructor approval is documented.
The Conversation may take place face to face or via phone or video chat. You may NOT provide the questions to the nurse and ask the nurse to provide written or typed answers.
You may use audio, audio/video, or typed format (on the template) to record and submit the Phase 2: Conversation with the Selected Nurse. Use the format you agreed to in Phase 1. There is no advantage to using any one format. Grading will be the same (see rubric below) regardless of the format selected.
NOTE: Recordings must be 20 minutes or shorter.
Only one file may be submitted and must include all rubric areas.
Obtain permission from the Selected Nurse to participate in the Conversation by reading the statement provided on the Template for this purpose (Selected Nurse must agree).
Clearly explain to the Selected Nurse that statements made in the Conversation will be recorded (audio, video, and/or written as transcript on template) and submitted to the instructor. The Conversation is not intended for public access.
Questions and topics for the Phase 2: Conversation with the Selected Nurse are provided for you on the required Template; these are the questions that must be included in the Conversation. Please notice that you will state the question/topic, the Selected Nurse will answer, and then you will add your own answer to that question/topic. This is not a traditional interview, but instead is a Conversation with sharing of memories and ideas related to the questions and topics. You may ask up to three additional questions if you like, but these are not scored.
At the close of the conversation, make a clear and detailed statement of gratitude for the Selected Nurse's time and sharing in this Conversation (Note: A simple "thank you" is not sufficient.)
Write a summary of the content of the Conversation. Be clear and thorough.

In this section of the paper, provide depth by reflecting on your learning from the answers provided by the nurse in your Phase 2 Conversation. Remember that reflection is an activity that involves your deep thought about your Phase 2 Conversation experience and the nurse’s answers. Think about the experiences that the nurse shared as well as your learning from those answers.
Information in this section should be two to four well developed paragraphs for a total of 800-1000 words in the entire paper (excluding the Title Page). Writing should be well organized, logical, and clear. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation should be correct throughout the paper.
Insight Gained from Conversation Regarding Leadership, Provision of Care, and/or Evidence-Based Practice
This section of the Reflection Paper focuses on insight that you gained from the Phase 2 Conversation. Depth is expected as you explain your insight and reasons why. You may select leadership, provision of care, and/or evidence-based practice as your focus in this section; clearly identify which of the three choices you select. You may select more than one of those topics, but no additional points will be earned for choosing more than one. Your choice should be guided by the answers provided by the nurse in your Phase 2 Conversation.
Information in this section should be two to four well developed paragraphs for a total of 800-1000 words in the entire paper (excluding the Title Page). Writing should be well organized, logical, and clear. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation should be correct throughout the paper.
Analysis of Impact of Nursing History on Professional Practice Today and in the Future
In this section, you will analyze the impact that nursing history has on professional nursing practice today and in the future. Writing in a clear and thorough manner, delineate the impact today versus the impact you anticipate in the future; both today and the future must be covered well in this section of the paper.
Information in this section should be two to four well developed paragraphs for a total of 800-1000 words in the entire paper (excluding the Title Page). Writing should be well organized, logical, and clear. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation should be correct throughout the paper.
Conclusion
Provide a Conclusion as the final portion of your paper. Write a summary of the three main sections (headings) in your paper that is complete yet concise. End the Conclusion with a concluding statement tying the parts of your paper together as a whole.
