Week 1 Discussion

After reading the articles by Crable et al., and Stevens in your reading list and Ch 12 in your McEwen and Wills text think about the clinical environment in which you currently work.

Select one model of EBP presented and a practice problem you have noticed and determine what you would do to institute EBP into your current practice to address the problem. Discuss what you would anticipate as the opportunities and the challenges in implementing this change.

Week 2 Discussion

Define a clinical problem in your area that you would like to research.

Find five current (last 5-7 years) research articles on that topic and categorize the studies via the hierarchy of evidence pyramid. Discuss any challenges you had locating primary, higher order studies on your topic. Do you feel there is a need for additional research on this topic?

Week 4 Discussion

Identify a problem in your clinical area. Choose a study from your research article search for your annotated bibliography assignment related to the clinical problem you identified.

In that research article:

Did the study use a quantitative or qualitative approach?

Identify the problem statement and purpose of the study.

What are the research questions in the study? Explain the parts of the study question using the PICO acronym.

What methodology was used to collect data?

Create a well worded research question that relates to the problem you identified in your clinical area.

Post your question along with the link to your research article into the forum and discuss how to improve/narrow/broaden your question. Help your fellow students by constructively using your thoughts/experience with the class in discussing their research questions.

Week 5 Discussion

Take the research problem you have chosen and discuss how it could be studied using a quantitative approach. Discuss the pros and cons of studying this problem using a quantitative research approach.

Create a well worded research question for a quantitative study. (If considering an experimental or quasi experimental quantitative approach you will create a hypothesis and null hypothesis for your clinical problem).

Critique the responses of at least two of your classmates.

Week 7 Discussion

Take the research problem you have chosen and discuss how it could be studied using a qualitative approach. Who would make up the sample for your study and what type of qualitative sampling technique would you use to select your participants and why?

Create a well worded research question for a qualitative study

Critique the responses of at least two of your classmates.

Week 9 Discussion

Take the research problem you have chosen and discuss how it could be studied as a quality improvement project.

Could it be used to improve EBP in healthcare?

Include in your discussion the applicability, generalizability, and relevance your study would have to the population of people you work with.

Discuss the approach to your study using the PDSA cycle and one other quality improvement model.

Discuss the responses of at least two of your classmates.

Week 10 Discussion

Discuss your finalized ideas for your research proposal.

Include approach, methodology, funding, team members, ethical considerations, IRB, and timeline.

Include why you choose this topic and how you believe your results will benefit nursing.

Discuss the responses of at least two of your classmates.

Week 11 Discussion

Post your poster presentation by Wednesday.

Choose two presentations of your classmates to constructively critique. Address issues such as:

Is the title a good one?

Does the abstract summarize the main features?

Was the problem clearly stated and referenced?

Were the research questions explicitly stated?

Is literature appropriately cited, was the conceptual framework/theory articulated?

Was an appropriate research design used?

Was the population defined?

Was their data collection methodology appropriate?

Did it include a section for results and conclusion?

Did the proposal discuss limitations for the study?

Were their suggested areas for future research?

Through your discussion, how can you help your classmates in their presentation? Is there something that could be more succinct or needs more explanation?
