Acids and Bases

Instructions

Please complete the following steps for your discussion post and response.

Acids and bases can be found in many places including the kitchen. Acids like lemon juice can make foods taste sour. Basic or alkaline foods such as peas or almonds may have more of a bland taste.  As we’ve learned this week, an acid donates a proton and a base will accept a proton.

Choose three foods that you can find in your kitchen.

Describe how the food tastes, smells and looks.

Using this week’s resource, what is the pH of the various food you’ve consumed and how do they contribute to the acidity or alkalinity of the body-specifically discuss an organ or system in the body? You should include outside resources and cite them according to APA.

Are there specific conditions that might benefit by consuming more acidic foods or alkaline foods?

Acids and Bases

Instructions

Please post 1 peer response.

In the response post, include the following:

Using your peer’s chosen foods, discuss any complications of acidity or alkalinity of foods on another organ or system in the body?

Unit 1 Assessment

Instructions

Congratulations! You have been hired to be world-renowned chemist, Dr. Ima Muchmerry’s, new lab assistant for the term. She would like you to meet her in the Chemistry lab today at noon.

One of the fundamental tasks of a lab assistant is to be able to easily convert units of measurement from metric to the U.S. standard system (Imperial Standard) and back again. As you enter Dr. Muchmerry’s lab you discover a lab bench filled with various items and a note from Dr. Muchmerry.

Download the attached assignment file.

Figure out the mystery.

Submit the completed mystery.

Task 1

On the table you will find various items that will need to be converted from the metric system into the U.S standard of measurement or from the US standard of measurement to the metric system. Once you have figured out the correct conversion, place the correct measurement in the chart. Use the same number of significant figures.  For instance, use 3 significant figures for the bottle of water and use 2 significant figures for the temperature.  The first number for each answer will give you the code to the chemistry supply closet. Here you will find your next task. Good Luck. If I don’t eat them all, I’ll bring you back a cupcake.

Task 2

As you walk in the door you see shelves of test tubes, Erlenmeyer flasks filled with labeled chemicals, a large box and a note from Dr. Ima.

Well done on solving the conversion task. Please make sure you keep the storage room code in a safe place because you will need it throughout the term.

I just received a shipment of chemicals that will need to be labeled. I noticed that when they shipped, the company forgot to fully label the various chemicals. Use the periodic table to help you accomplish the task. Once you have completed the table, add all the neutrons in the column together. The total number of neutrons will equal the time I would like to see you back in the lab next week. By the way, its PM not AM. I will see you next week.

This week in your chemistry class, you have been introduced to the process of titration.  Remember that titration is the process used to determine the unknown concentration of a solution by using the known concentration of another solution. This process uses a buret to measure the volume of titrant that is added to the analyte.  Below is a set of measurements that I would like you to solve:

How to read a buret:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Asg55fFt4zk

Suppose you titrated a sample of NaOH with 0.150 M of HCl. Your starting volume on the burette is 0.00 mL. This is your final reading. How much NaOH was dispensed from the buret?

 Answer:

Suppose you titrated a sample of NaOH with 0.150 M of HCl. Your starting volume on the burette is 0.00 mL. This is your final reading. How much NaOH was dispensed from the buret?

 Answer:

Well done!

Now we need to solve for an unknown.

For your review, I have included a link to a video for you to review titration and how to solve for an unknown. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1XTOsnNlgg

Using the informationI’ve provided, calculate the molarity of the HCl concentration using the information provided.

Here’s the reaction:

HCl + NaOH ----> H2O + NaCl

Volume of HCl: 20.0 mL

Concentration of HCl: UNKNOWN

Know concentration of NaOH: 0.100 M

Titrate end point or total of NaOH volume dispensed: 48.6mL

Answer:

From the above information, would you put the HCl solution in the buret or in the Erlenmeyer flask in this titration reaction?

Answer:

Would you add the indicator, in this case we would use Phenolphthalein, to the HCl or NaOH?

Answer:

Calculate the molarity of the HCl concentration using the information provided.

Here is the reaction:

HCl + NaOH ----> H2O + NaCl

Volume of HCl: 10.0 mL

Concentration of HCl: UNKNOWN

Concentration of NaOH: 0.100 M

Volume of NaOH dispensed to reach endpoint 12.00 mL

Answer:

If you walk into any kitchen, bathroom, laundry room or pantry, you are bound to find numerous types of acids and bases.

Using the information provided in the chart below, completely fill in the missing pieces of information.

Text message from Dr. Ima:

When you walk into the lab, you find a note from Dr. Ima.

Hello, I’m going to be running late to the lab today, so I am hopeful you can help me out by student teaching the first part of my class. I left you instructions, (located below) and an example for you to reference. I will be back in class before you are done teaching the class.

I have enough of Dr. Spenser’s cupcakes for the entire class, so please pass them out. Looking forward to seeing you.

Instructions on week 7 Lesson Plan:

Create a 5 minute video of you teaching how cellular energy is created from eating Dr. Spenser’s world-famous cupcake.  You must be present in the video.  Screen-o-matic is a free program that you can use (https://screencast-o-matic.com/ (Links to an external site.)) or you can use the camera setting on your computer and record a PowerPoint video.

Your explanation should include a detailed process of the reactions and steps of cellular respiration.

Your explanation should include a visual demonstration of the steps in cellular respiration.

Please submit your video as either a link to YouTube or if you are using PowerPoint, please save the file as a video file (such as MP4 or WMV) and attach the video.

Below is an example of the detail that I would be expecting in the class. Remember, you are teaching students the topic, so what information would you share that would help them understand this process?

Congratulations on a job well done.
