What is Healthcare Informatics?

Description of Video: Incorporating information technologies and information management, this work describes evolving areas of efficiency in the healthcare industry due to healthcare informatics enhancements. Beginning with an overview of how information management can enhance organizational efficiency the book delves into how informatics can impact productivity for healthcare providers and reduce costs. It stresses the incorporation of available information technologies along with appropriate management tactics to ensure the most effective informatics outcomes that can drive efficiencies. Areas that are addressed include project management in healthcare, knowledge management, decision support systems, business intelligence, Six Sigma, and advanced analytics such as data mining.

Title: Nursing Informatics | An Inside Look

Description of Video: The rapid adoption of electronic health records around the nation has certainly galvanized the interest in informatics. More importantly, it has created a large demand for individuals that are equipped to be a liaison between the clinical and technical domains in healthcare. In this video, you will see interviews for an Epic Pharmacy Informatics Consultant on various topics to shed some light on this unique career path.

Directions:

 Chapter 1 introduced you to concepts related to the scientific basis of your profession and the relationship between health informatics and your discipline. Chapter 2: This chapter explores information, information systems (IS), and information science.

After reading Chapters 1 and 2 and watching the videos on the Health Informatics and informatics Systems, using one (1) of the presentation methods:

Describe a scenario in your discipline where you used data, information, knowledge, and wisdom.

Complete the self-assessment of informatics competencies presented in Table 1-1 and create an action plan for achieving these competencies. Your Action plan should be a minimum of ONE paragraph 4-6 sentences.

In health care, think about a typical day of practice and describe the setting. How many times do you interact with Information Science or Information Systems (ISs)? What are the ISs that you interact with, and how do you access them? Are they at the patient’s side, handheld, or station based? How does their location and ease of access impact patient care?

If you could meet only TWO (2) of the rights discussed in chapter 2, which one would you omit and why? Provide your rationale for both right you chose to meet.

A minimum of one reference is required to support your response to the discussion question and reply to a classmate. You may cite the course required textbook and or other sources in which you have used content from. Make sure your references are in APA format.
