Module 3 Area of Interest

Purpose

The master's-prepared advanced practice nurse is expected to analyze gaps in knowledge or evidence, formulate research questions, and implement solutions for improving practice in one's specialty area (National League for Nursing, 2010). There are two parts to this assessment. In the first (Part I), students will consider an area of interest, identify a practice issue or problem related to the area of interest, and develop a clinical/practice question to guide an evidence-based practice process improvement project using the Area of Interest Form (Links to an external site.). Second (Part II), students will select qualitative and quantitative articles related to the area of interest. Students will critique the articles using the provided appraisal tool located in the MSN Toolbox.

Consider different areas of interest related to future professional practice in the master's-prepared advanced practice role. Think about your practicum project and where this will take place.

How might you resolve the issues or problems with an evidence-based practice quality improvement project?

Complete the critique of the selected articles using the provided appraisal tool. If you chose a research article you will need to complete Appendix E. If you chose a non-research article you will need to fill out Appendix F.

Purpose

As a master's-prepared advanced practice nurse, you will have opportunities to resolve practice issues. Nursing theory can be used to resolve a practice problem or issue. Components of a nursing theory or the entire nursing theory can provide the framework for developing and implementing a strategy to help resolve a practice problem or issue. The purpose of this assessment is to apply theory to support a resolution for the practice problem or issue identified in Module 3.

(Note: You may have also selected a prominent nursing practice issue that is of interest to you.) Analyze scholarly literature related to the issue/problem of and strategies for resolution. Review different nursing theories that could support a resolution to the practice issue or problem you have identified.

In a four to six-page written paper, address the following.

Discuss how nursing theory can be applied to solve the practice issue/problem.

A minimum of four scholarly nursing literature references must be used.

Describe the selected issue or problem, and address the following.

What is the specific issue or problem?

Why should the nursing profession care about this issue or problem?

What does the nursing literature say about this issue or problem, including its frequency of occurrence?

Who are the stakeholders affected by the issue or problem?

In this assessment, students will select a microsystem-level healthcare policy that addresses the area of interest selected in Module 3. Students will examine the policy from three different perspectives: regulatory, economic, and social.

You have been asked to facilitate an educational workshop for a group of colleagues on the importance of evidence-based quality improvement initiatives. Select a learning theory category (either behavioral or cognitive) to help support the development of the workshop. Develop a PPT presentation that explains how you will create a workshop that will meet the learning needs of your audience and address the stated objectives for the presentation. Use Bloom's taxonomy to develop appropriate objectives for the workshop.

Create a PowerPoint presentation to address the following.

Identify a learning theory category—behavioral or cognitive. Describe the main assumptions of the selected learning theory.

Present three learning objectives for the workshop on the importance of evidence-based quality improvement initiatives. Develop one objective for each learning domain (cognitive, psychomotor, and affective). Use the appropriate taxonomy when developing the learning objectives (e.g., if the audience is not familiar with the topic, lower-level taxonomy would be appropriate. If the audience is experienced at conducting evidence-based improvement projects, higher-level taxonomy may be appropriate). Discuss why the specific learning objectives were developed.

Create three active learning activities that will be included in the workshop to help keep your audience engaged. The learning activity should help meet the learning objectives of the workshop. Describe each active learning activity and how it aligns with the selected learning theory (behavioral or cognitive). Explain what type of learning style the activity best addresses.

Identify how you will evaluate learning (e.g., quizzes, surveys, observation, self-report). Explain how the selected evaluation will demonstrate how each learning objective was met.

Provide a conclusion. Include a summary on the selected learning theory category. Describe the relationship among learning theory, objectives, activities, and evaluation.
