HUMN303 Introduction to the Humanities

Week 1 Discussion

DQ1 APPROACHING THE HUMANITIES

How is studying the humanities beneficial to you as a person and as a professional? Why does thinking and writing about history require a different approach than we're accustomed to? What are some of the conventions (the rules and expectations) of thinking and writing about history?

Use key details from the lesson and reading for this week to help support your response.

In addition, here are some extra resources to get you started.

A Brief Guide to Writing the History Paper

DQ2 EARLY EASTERN MORAL SYSTEMS

The Chinese moral order (much like that of the Greeks) "depended not upon divine decree or authority, but instead upon the people's own right actions" (Sayre, 2016, p. 106). Please discuss the development of China's religious texts from Chapter 3: Empire: Urban Life and Imperial Majesty in Rome, China, and India. What were the main ideals expressed in these texts?

As part of your response, consider the development of Hinduism and Buddhism in India from Chapter 3. Were these religions based upon divine decree or on people's own actions? What were some of the important premises of Indian religions?

Be sure to provide specific examples from the reading to help develop your response (and use the flipbook below to point you in the right direction!).

Week 2 Discussion

DQ1 Judaism, Christianity, and Islam

Last week, you discussed two of the five major world religions: Hinduism and Buddhism. This week, you will examine the rise, spread, and development of the remaining three in particular: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Please review this week's lesson, Chapter 4: The Flowering of Religion in the textbook, and the video demonstrating how religion spread around the world before answering the following questions.

How the 5 Major World Religions Spread (Links to an external site.)

Of the five major world religions, which are monotheistic and which are polytheistic? Why? What part of their origin stories render them monotheistic or polytheistic?

What are the primary teachings of each of the world religions?

How did each of these religions influence the others as they were developing?

DQ2 Capellanus and Courtly Love

In Chapter 5 of your textbook as well as in this week's lesson, you began reading about the medieval period (also referred to as the Middle Ages or the Dark Ages). To get started, briefly discuss the feudal system of medieval Europe. Then, conduct a bit of research on Andreas Capellanus's The Art of Courtly Love before you read the assigned section (see Chapter 5, pages 32–33, "What Persons Are Fit for Love" at https://sirmykel.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/the-art-of-courtly-love-andreas-cappelanus.pdf.

In Capellanus's view, who is fit for love? Why or why not? How is this text based on the class system deeply ingrained within the feudal system?

Be sure to use specific examples from the lesson and text to help support your claims, and remember from last week that although we should not judge old texts against modern standards, we do need understand what ideas authors such as Capellanus present.

Week 3 Discussion

DQ1 GOTHICISM, NATURALISM, AND HUMANISM

How did Gothicism and naturalism in the late medieval period lead to the defining characteristic of the Renaissance—humanism? Consider the ideas explored in both Chapters 6 and Chapter 7 as you plan your response and include specific examples from the reading to help develop your response.

DQ2 RENAISSANCE ART ANALYSIS - RENAISSANCE TEAM 2

This week, your goal is to help one another create a narrated presentation discussing a Renaissance painting or sculpture. You'll be divided into groups. In each group discussion, please begin by reading the section in the lesson on art, watching the art tutorial, and then helping one another discuss the components of visual art. Then choose a painting or sculpture by an artist discussed in Chapter 7: The Renaissance: Florence, Rome, and Venice in the textbook and talk about the historical context, as well as the artist's life. Your task by the end of the week is to create a 3-minute video or narrated slide show that unpacks the techniques used by your artist and potential meanings of the painting. Please post your video or presentation here by the end of the week, and carefully use APA formatting to help with any research you wish to integrate.

Please make sure you review the assignment for the week as it contains more detail, and as always, please review the grading rubric and use it as your checklist to complete before submitting your assignment.

What were the events leading up to the Reformation, and how did the Reformation affect religious art? Please provide examples and post pictures of the visual arts you're discussing.

DQ2 SPANISH COLONIZATION OF THE AMERICAS

We've spent a great deal of time discussing the events of Europe the last few weeks. Now it is time to turn our attention to other parts of the world and how the European invasion and colonization affected these regions. In Chapter 9 of your textbook and in the week's lesson, you're reading about how increased contact between the continents had lasting effects on the world. Please discuss the impact of European contact with both the Americas and Mogul India.

Religious and monarchical absolutism were the hallmarks of the periods you're reading about this week. What is absolutism? DQ1 NEOCLASSICISM AND ROMANTICISM

Neoclassicism and romanticism are two movements in art that overlap in Europe. Please read about each in Chapter 12: The Age of Revolution and discuss the time frame, defining characteristics, and ideology of each. Please provide lots of visual examples so the class can better understand what you're talking about. Feel free to create a Kaltura Media Gallery video to really explain your ideas about the works that emerged from these two important movements.

DQ2 COLONIALISM AND SLAVERY

This week, you'll be studying more about powerful nations, such as Britain and France, colonizing other parts of the world. You'll also be reading some hard things about slavery as part of trade and colonization. Let's begin with discussing William Blake's engraving, Negro Hung Alive by the Ribs to a Gallows (page 394 of your textbook). Who was William Blake?
