Current Research on the Respiratory System Essay

Goal: The goal of this assignment is to encourage you to explore the research involving the different organ systems within the human body. This will aid you in numerous ways. 1. If you are on a medical career path but unsure of which type of setting you would like to work in, this may help hone your thoughts on which you would like to pursue. For example, you may be taking this course to earn credits toward nursing, but which type of department would you eventually wish to work in? If you were to work in an Orthopedics department, you might be more interested in having greater knowledge of the muscular and skeletal organ systems. Of course, you need to know everything! But, having greater knowledge or interest in the work you are doing is always beneficial.

Directions:

• Review the organ systems we covered in class, and select one (Integumentary, Skeletal, Muscular, Nervous, Lymphatic, Respiratory, Digestive, Urinary, Reproductive (both Male and Female))

• Now that you have selected one, find six recent research articles (from 2019-2022)

? This is easier than you might think. For example, go to google scholar and search the organ system. On the results page, filter by a custom range date and set it to 2019-2022. Now just explore the research articles.

? Google different terms and try to understand what you are reading. This is difficult for everyone! Terminology is so specific that even scientists outside of the field have to google terms as they read. It can take time but this is great practice and you will learn a lot.

• For the assignment, you will need to write three separate sections.

? 1st: OVERVIEW: an overview of the organ system you chose, i.e. what's the core functionality of the system and what organs comprise the system. (1 paragraph - 50 points)

? 2nd: CURRENT RESEARCH: this is where you summarize the six research articles. (6 paragraph - 350 points)

? 3rd: PERSPECTIVE: write one paragraph containing your thoughts on the current research you have found and why you selected this organ system. (1 paragraph - 50 points)

? 50 points will be following formatting instructions, grammar, and providing sources.

• Total of 500 points

For this and the upcoming case studies, you will need to write summaries on the research articles pertaining to the topic you have chosen. There have been some questions regarding how to construct the summary.

Of course, when I state "1 paragraph" this doesn't supply information on the length. The section/paragraph needs to be as long as it needs to be to address the following points:

• What is the question that the researchers are trying to address with their research?

• What is the methodology?

• What were the researchers' results?

• How does it address their initial question being asked and how does it relate to the big picture.

If your research article addresses numerous questions and has numerous results, you need to discuss all of them. So, there is no length requirement for the summary of each article. It needs to be as long as it needs to be to answer all of the points listed above.
