NHS8040 21st-Century Health Care Leadership
Unit 1 Discussion
It Takes a Team!
To develop high-performing teams, a leader must first understand disciplines other than his or her own. In this discussion, you will examine individual professional contributions to health care and public health teams and the roles and responsibilities of interprofessional primary care team members.
A multidisciplinary approach to address patient, family, and community needs requires mutual respect and understanding among various health care professionals. In a multidisciplinary team, each discipline contributes independently to a patient's care or to a new policy analysis or formulation. In an interprofessional team, members work closely together and communicate frequently to optimize outcomes for the individual, family, or community. This type of team is organized around a common set of problems and meets frequently to consult (American Public Health Association, n.d.).
After reviewing the unit readings, please begin your initial post by defining the terms multidisciplinary and interprofessional, and then discuss your experiences in health care or public health teams. Give an example of a successful team and an unsuccessful team if possible. Analyze whether each team was multidisciplinary or interprofessional.
Be sure to include at least one APA-formatted citation (in text plus full reference). The citation may be from course textbooks, assigned readings, or an outside source.
Note: For all course discussions, be sure to adhere to the requirements for initial posts and peer responses addressed in the School of Nursing and Health Sciences Faculty Expectations message (FEM).
Response Guidelines
Read and respond to your peers' posts according to FEM guidelines. In each response, compare your own experiences to those of your peer. Ask for clarification or comment on the learner's analysis of whether the team was multidisciplinary or interprofessional. If your response offers an alternative viewpoint or refers to the ideas or work of others, your assertions must be supported by citing an outside source, using APA formatting.

Whom to Contact? Whom to Consider?
While it is still early in your doctoral education process, it is important to begin thinking about where you might complete your doctoral capstone project and who could be your preceptor.
Use this discussion as a place to solicit feedback from your instructor and peers.
Consider the following:
Do you live in a rural setting?
What resources would you need to be successful in this process?
Do you have access to professionals in your discipline with graduate degrees, preferably doctorates, who could serve as your preceptor?
Are you currently working in a health care or public health setting?
If so, is there someone you could ask for guidance in this area?
What skills do you need to be comfortable in an informational interview when you must secure the site and preceptor for your project?
What are at least three questions you plan to use in your leadership or preceptor interview for feedback?
Refer to the guidelines in the FEM as you prepare your post.

Unit 4 Discussion
Leadership Profile
One of the best ways to understand leadership is through the evaluation of self and others. Our personal case studies document who we are and who we might want to become. From your analysis, you will begin to develop a personal philosophy of leadership, which will guide you in your health care or public health career.
In your previous courses, you identified a leadership theory or style that aligned with your views of leadership. For this discussion, expand on this theory or style and analyze what you have learned about yourself to describe your personal leadership philosophy. Provide a brief example from your experience where emotional intelligence was used—or could have been used—to improve or facilitate a complex situation. Consider how this relates to the theory or style you have identified as your own.
Be sure to include at least one APA-formatted citation (in-text plus full reference). The citation may be from your course text, assigned readings, or an outside source.
Remember to follow the requirements for discussions addressed in the School of Nursing and Health Sciences Faculty Expectations message (FEM).
Response Guidelines
Read and respond to your peers' posts according to FEM guidelines, addressing the following:
Compare the leadership theory or style with which the learner identified to the one you chose. Comment on the characteristics the learner would like to develop or ask for clarification or elaboration. Finally, identify which leadership theory informs your choice of strategies.

Discuss the issues most germane to the protection of human research subjects when conducting analyses on large administrative databases. How do researchers manage the issue of informed consent when conducting research in large datasets containing protected health information (PHI)? Should these same rules apply to health data uploaded from personal electronic devices for health care improvement or research? Why or why not? Support your opinion with citations from professional literature.
