NSG 370 Ethics Presentation Rubric and Directions

 Students will be responsible for providing a well-researched and well-practiced oral presentation informing the class about a current healthcare-related case which has an ethical dilemma. You will select a healthcare ethical dilemma case that is currently in the news or has taken place within the past 5 years (local, state, national, or international level). Each student must choose a different case (first come, first choice).

In your presentation you should (see rubric below for details):  

describe the ethical dilemma within the case including both sides of the dilemma and the rationale why each choice surrounding the dilemma makes the choice uncomfortable – background information, context, importance to nursing / healthcare.

describe the nature of the conflict from multiple perspectives, including all the parties (stakeholders) involved.

 identify the ethical principles, theories (viewpoints), and legal issues involved, and describe how they support ethical decision-making or are in conflict with one another.

 provide a critical evaluation, examining the resolution of the conflict (or current state of the conflict if it is not yet resolved) in light of the literature. Locate and offer solutions and mitigation for the ethical dilemma.

provide bibliographic information.

 Your presentation should be thorough and well-organized. The time limit for your presentation is 6-8 minutes. Time limits will be adhered to, and points will be deducted for going over the time limit. You should be preparedto speak knowledgably and credibly, citing your sources. Your presentation will be graded using the grading rubric provided.

You are expected to provide a one-page handout to include worthwhile information about the topic to include:

• the ethical dilemma (both sides showing an action and the reason the action is uncomfortable)

 • solutions / mitigation for each side based upon credible and scholarly literature. The literature used is clearly identified for the solutions and mitigation of the dilemma.

• include the student’s own summary on how the dilemma can be mitigated.

The handout should be posted with the PowerPoint in the course so that the handout can be accessed by other students prior to the presentation.

 You will choose the topic as an assignment within the course and may receive suggestions/feedback regarding your presentation plan at that time. This assignment, choosing a topic, is mandatory and part of the grade. Change in the topic and/or references once posted for approval will result in a loss of points. If the chosen topic is not used for the presentation, then no points will be awarded.
