GB580 Strategic Management
Unit 1 discussion
Topic: FLIGBY is about balancing people, profit and planet
(sustainability and environment) in a way that there is a much bigger emphasis
on people than on the other two aspects.
How would you balance these three at your own company or in
your own life? Bear in mind that the three together have to be 100% and in case
you increase one aspect, the other two have to decrease, so when you craft your
response, assign percentages to each. Also address whether you believe that the
percentages change depending on your environment, but be sure to explain how
and why.
GB580 Strategic Management
Unit 2 discussion
Topic: Please choose a maximum of seven employee suggestions
to raise commitment and facilitate employee satisfaction at the winery - why
and how those are related to the mission statement? Prioritize these seven
suggestions according to the alignment of each to the winery vision/mission.
GB580 Strategic Management
Unit 3 discussion
Topic: Think about a time in your professional life (or
personal life if you do not have enough job experience), and describe a time
when your company’s mission/vision did not align with the goals set for you or
your department. Keeping in mind the 3 Ps, people, profit, and planet, how
would you have either rewritten the vision/mission or rewritten the goals so
that everything was in better alignment? Remember to explain why your
suggestions would have worked better.
GB580 Strategic Management
Unit 4 discussion
Topic: A company’s strategic position is concerned with the
impact of the external environment on strategy. The organization exists in the
context of a complex social, technological, environmental and political world.
Identify and discuss a selection of environmental variables that have affected
Turul's actual business positions. How have these external variables impacted
the attitudes and approaches of its employees? Be specific.
GB580 Strategic Management
Unit 5 discussion
After having completed most of the virtual reality simulation
scenes, please answer the following questions.
Topic: What kind of feedback regarding your management style
have you gotten from your virtual Turul team during the game? How would you
improve your feedback mindset and skills based on the reactions outcomes you
experienced during your time at Turul Winery?
GB580 Strategic Management
Unit 6 discussion
Topic: Choose three of the leadership skills where the
simulation indicated you needed improvement. Outline a plan of action to
address these challenges, and be sure to state this outline in terms of goals,
actions necessary to achieve those goals, the timeline for the actions, and the
metrics you will use to measure your success.

Unit 2 Assignment
Craft your life vision statement. Assure it is succinct, and
no longer than 30 words.
Then, after participating in FLIGBY scenes 1-8, and reading
the section in Chapter 2 of Blue Ocean Strategy regarding the Eliminate,
Reduce, Raise, Create (ERRC) tool, craft an ERRC grid for yourself. Take into
consideration your personal and professional life. Have at least two goals in
each of the four quadrants.
Focus on the most important two (out of 8) goals that you
inserted into the grid.
Are your goals in alignment with your vision? If not,
determine what is out of alignment and adjust accordingly.
Elaborate on why each of these two goals fits into your life
vision statement.
Here is the grading rubric. Your Assignment must be in a
Microsoft Word document, double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman or Arial
font, one-inch margins, and include a cover page and an APA reference page.
Your Assignment should adhere to APA guidelines.

Unit 3 Assignment
You will need to complete scenes 1-10 in FLIGBY, if you have
not already done so, craft an ERRC grid for yourself based on your reading in
Blue Ocean Strategy, Chapter 2. Take into consideration your personal and
professional life. Have at least two goals in each of the four quadrants. Focus
on the most important two (out of 8) goals that you inserted into the grid.
Using the Goal Setting Plan template, create between two and
five objectives for each of the two most important goals. Once the objectives
are determined, fill in the resource, measurement, and targets for each
objective. Include that template to your paper, and also write about your
findings and how you will accomplish them—with particular focus on the ones
that present challenges.

Unit 4 Assignment
After completing FLIGBY, scenes 1-19, and the assigned
readings, you will focus on ways to manage conflict in the workplace and to
empower employees. Part of your challenge will be to recognize common
difficulties you and other managers might have in delegating. What are the
inner motivations that keep you and others from delegating work? What are the
outcomes and challenges from under-delegating? How do these problems affect
conflict resolution?
This Assignment requires that you identify at least three
employee conflict situations that you have observed in FLIGBY. Identify the
players, and then speculate about each employees’ motivation(s) behind their
position in the conflict. You will pick one of these conflicts, and outline a
plan for negotiating through it to reach a resolution. Then, you will assign
tasks/responsibilities to each party that reflect the outcome(s) of the
negotiation. Explain how you believe this delegation will help solve the
conflict. What challenges will your approach likely bring? How will you
overcome those challenges?

Unit 6 Assignment 1
After completing FLIGBY, scenes 1-23, and the assigned
readings, access your FLIGBY Metrix Individual Report. Note the 29 skills that
were assessed, and answer the following questions:
What have you learned about your strengths and how they
relate to finding flow in yourself and promoting flow in others?
What have you learned about your weaknesses? Cover at least
three, and include scholarly sources related to each one identified. When you
include these, discuss the skill you need to improve as well as proven
strategies for improvement.
Assure your paper is in APA format, and use at least three
academic resources that help you better understand the highest and lowest rated
skills based on your individual assessment. For example, if motivation is a
problem identified in your assessment, research scholarly articles on
motivation, and develop your paper based on what you learned through your
research.

GB580 Strategic Management
Unit 6 Assignment 2
The FLIGBY simulation required you to act as the
manager/leader of a fictitious winery in California. The simulation used
virtual reality to take you through 21 scenes that involved managing the team
of executive employees while they wrestled to balance the vision of the
company, profits, reputation, and employee engagement. As you progressed
through each scene, you were asked to make decisions. Each decision affected
additional scenes, and during the entire process, a profit and flow meter gauged
the quality of your decisions.
Behind your experience in the simulation, an algorithm was
functioning that measured you on 29 leadership qualities. These 29 qualities
are sorted into four major areas: corporate atmosphere, profit, sum flow, and trophies.
The grading rubric shows how these four areas will translate to your overall
score in the game—reflected in the Unit 6, Assignment 2.
Unit 6, Assignment 2 also assesses your performance in the
teamwork professional competency. Of the 29 leadership qualities, FLIGBY
research has shown that seven directly reflect your skills in teamwork.
These seven are:
Emotional Intelligence (70) - The capacity and readiness to
understand, express and regulate emotions in oneself and in others
Feedback (67) - Feedback to employees is information
regarding their performance that they can also act on. Feedback must be shared
in a manner that is understandable and perceived by them as being provided in a
highly respectful manner. As an organization seeks to improve its performance,
feedback helps it to make the required adjustments. Feedback is immediate. It
is difficult for people to stay absorbed in any activity unless they get
timely, "online" information about how well they are doing. The sense
of total involvement of the flow experience derives in large part from knowing
that what one does matters and has consequences. Feedback may come from
colleagues or supervisors who comment on performance, but preferably it is the
activity itself that will provide this information.
Motivation (65) - Motivational skills are those that enable
a person to become motivated and work toward achieving goals. This is the
readiness to understand what causes a person to become motivated and stay that
way. It helps with making sure people are the most productive that they can be.
Personal Strengths (66) - Recognizing and applying personal
strengths is the readiness to discover and to put to good use those personal
strengths of others’ that are not immediately obvious. It is the realization
that those strengths can potentially induce flow states in that other person
and thus benefit the organization.
Balancing Skill (60) - Balancing skill is the readiness to
maintain the same importance between things, considering them in the same way.
Effective leadership is about balance. A balance between challenges and skills
is necessary for Flow. It is easier to become completely involved in a task if
we believe it is doable. If it appears to be beyond our capacity, we tend to
respond to it by feeling anxious; if the task is too easy we get bored. In
either case attention shifts from what needs to be accomplished—the anxious
person is distracted by worries about the outcome, while the bored one starts
searching for other things to do. The ideal condition can be expressed by the
simple formula: Flow occurs when both challenges and skills are high and equal
to each other.
Teamwork (61) - Teamwork management is the readiness to
form, facilitate and monitor teamwork and teams.
Active Listening (63) - Active listening is a way of
responding to another person that improves mutual understanding. This is a
method of listening that involves understanding the content of a message as
well as the intent of the sender and the circumstances under which the message
is given. Active listening is a structured form of listening and responding
that focuses the attention on the speaker. The listener does not have to agree
with the speaker – he or she must simply state what he or she thinks the
speaker said.
Each of the seven areas is rated separately from 1-100, 100
being the best. Benchmark values are established for each, and that number
represents the average score in that area (the average of 12,000 people having
played the game). After each of the seven qualities listed above, the benchmark
value is noted in parentheses. Your teamwork score assesses how you compare to
your peers in each of the areas. This is a calculation that averages the seven
scores (as noted above), and applies the average using this rubric:
